Explore the VMU Kaunas Botanical Garden With Your Phone

The only downside of the app is that it doesn’t let you smell the flowers – at least not as of 2018!

Established in 1923, the Kaunas Botanical Garden of Vytautas Magnus University is the second largest in the country. The historic manor, a grandeur Greenhouse and vast collections of different species including roses and dahlias (oh, we love the kaunastic dahlias – we’ve even blogged about them) are just some of the reasons the visitors love to come back here. It’s also a perfect place for a date, even in the cold months (we’ve blogged about that, too).

There’s a new reason to come back or visit the botanical garden for the first time. It’s a mobile app slash audioguide called “Botanikos sodai” [Botanical Gardens]. Developed by the Association of Botanical Gardens of Lithuanian Universities, the app presents the best of three of them, the other two being the Botanical Garden of Vilnius University and the Botanical Garden of Klaipėda University.

The app includes an interactive map of the botanical garden that’s super handy because the park is quite significant. It also offers a long list of interesting plants, objects or buildings for you to discover and learn more about with the help of the audioguide (the information is also available as text). The app offers two routes in the Kaunas Botanical Garden – one in the Greenhouse and the other in the park. This means 2 km of walking and more than 50 objects to admire.

The only downside of the app is that it doesn’t let you smell the flowers – at least not as of 2018!

“Botanikos sodai” is available free of charge on both Google Play and Appstore.

VMU Kaunas Botanical Garden (Ž. E. Žilibero g. 6) is open daily 9 am – 8 pm. Buy your ticket before 7 pm and don’t forget the Greenhouse closes at 5 pm on weekdays and operates 10 am – 6 pm on weekend.
