Take a Ride with a Kaunastic Trolleybus

The illustrations of modernist architecture buildings were created by Tadas Bujanauskas for the “It’s Kaunastic” map series.

Less than a month ago we blogged about a mobile street art exhibition taking place in the streets of Kaunas. Next year, the current Škoda trolleybus fleet is going to be replaced by brand new ‘Solaris Trollino 12’ trolleybuses; the city is saying goodbye to the old Škodas by using them as canvases for street art.

We’re stoked to announce one of the trolleybuses has received a kaunastic facelift! Route #1 going from Islandijos pl. through E. Ožeškienės street, K. Donelaičio street, Vytauto avenue, Žemieji Šančiai to Panemunė, has just been decorated with the illustrations from our “Modernist’s Guide”. Created by Tadas Bujanauskas, the drawings present the rich modernist architecture heritage of Kaunas.

The two drawings transferred to the sides of the bus by artist Morfai depict the Kaunas central post office (architect Feliksas Vizbaras) and the iconic residential house of Pranas Gudavičius and Aleksandra Iljinienė (architect Arnas Funkas). The latter was also the inspiration for the graphic design of “Architecture of Optimism”, a travelling exhibition dedicated to the Centennial of Lithuania.

You can pick up “Modernist’s Guide” and a wide array of other free maps in the “It’s Kaunastic” series, including routes of Litvak heritage, gastronomy, family activities, street art etc., in various shops, galleries, cafes and hotels around Kaunas. Of course, all of them are available in the Kaunas IN Tourism Information Centre located at the Town Hall. Check out the digital copies if you're not in Kaunas at the moment.
