The most-awarded Lithuanian team ever, BC Žalgiris Kaunas, has already started its Lithuanian Basketball League games. The next one in their home arena is planned for Wednesday, September 25, against Pieno Žvaigždės. We’ll be there – and for the rest of the season, too!
October is also approaching, as well as the much-anticipated EuroLeague season. Did you know that, founded in 1944, BC Žalgiris Kaunas is one of the oldest teams in the tournament? Žalgiris is one of 11 European clubs to hold long-term licenses with the EuroLeague, which provides a guaranteed place in the regular-season phase of this league.
There have been some squad changes in the team over the summer. We’re thrilled to see Lukas Lekavičius back home from Panathinaikos and are looking forward to seeing the young local talents Martinas Geben and Karolis Lukošiūnas in full swing. The new team members from abroad Jock Landale, Nigel Hayes, Alex Pérez and Zach LeDay have all already settled in and warmed up in Kaunas! We can’t wait for the newcomers to experience the first game in a sold-out Žalgirio arena. The team atmosphere already seems to be great. Check out the video below to see what we mean...
So, EuroLeague. This season, the 18-team tournament will see each team playing a grand total of 34 games, as the number of double weeks increased from 5 to 7. BC Žalgiris Kaunas will have their season opener against Baskonia Vitoria in Žalgirio arena on October 4. A game against Baskonia was the season opener last season, too.
A week later, on October 11, Šarūnas Jasikevičius’ troops will head to Milan, where they look to take on AX Armani. The Lithuanian representatives in the tournament will play 10 games at home in the first leg of the season and 7 in the second.
The regular season will be finished with two games in Žalgirio Arena. On April 3, our team will face defending EuroLeague champions CSKA Moscow. It will be followed by a match against Bayern Munich a week later.
Having broken record after record in EuroLeague attendance last season, Žalgirio arena stands will again be painted in green-and-white weekly. During the first month of sales of the 2019-2020 season tickets, Zalgiris fans have bought out all 6000 of the planned season tickets. 82 per cent of last year’s season ticket holders retained their seats from last season – we’re looking forward to meeting all of them in the arena.
If you’re in Kaunas during the EuroLeague or LKL games, we suggest you include a visit to the arena in your itinerary. Not many countries in the world are as crazy about basketball as we are… And not many fans are as crazy about their teams as we are. We also must add that Žalgiris is a team that values its fans, so every season brings new attractions, interactions and reasons to spend more time in the arena. So… See you there?
