Five Kaunas Restaurants Added to the Michelin Guide

Lithuania has joined the ranks of the world's most exclusive culinary destinations, with its restaurants now featured in the renowned Michelin Guide.

On Thursday evening, during a special event in Vilnius, the list of Lithuanian restaurants selected for the prestigious Michelin guide was presented, including a handful of beautiful locations in Kaunas.

Being selected for the guide is a sign of quality in itself. In this inaugural year, 26 Lithuanian restaurants – whose top-drawer cuisine really impressed the Michelin Inspectors – join the main selection. Five of them have been awarded the iconic stars.

The Kaunas residents have a reason to celebrate with a bang! The prestigious list of restaurants recommended by the Michelin critics includes Dia, Arrivèe, and Uoksas in the city centre, as well as Monte Pacis in the baroque Pažaislis Monastery. All four restaurants in Kaunas are known for their creative menus, attention to detail, impeccable service and a focus on local ingredients.

Michelin has also announced a handful of restaurants with Bib Gourmand ratings, including Nüman in Kaunas. This rating recognizes friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices.

’Set just outside the city center, it has a charming, understated feel and the stunning photos on the walls draw the eye. Modern, flavor-led dishes are cooked with flair and, pleasingly, won’t break the bank. The MICHELIN Inspectors thought the homemade bread and the duck dumplings with dried mushrooms were superb, along with the guinea fowl, which was accompanied by some wonderfully cooked fries. Friendly service rounds out the whole experience,’ states the guide.

The history of the Michelin guide It all started in Clermont-Ferrand (a small French town) in 1889, when brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin founded their world-famous tyre company. To help motorists develop their trips, the brothers produced a small red guide filled with handy information for travellers. During the rest of 20th century, thanks to its serious and unique approach, the Michelin guides became best-sellers: the guide now rates over 40,000 establishments in over 24 territories across three continents, and more than 30 million guides have been sold worldwide since.
