The Kaunas IX Fort Museum, located in the Šilainiai area of Kaunas, is one of the largest monumental sites not only in Lithuania, but also in the whole Europe. It is a unique place with more than 100 years of history.
Built in 1913 as a defensive fortification, Kaunas IX Fort became a branch of Kaunas Hard Labour Prison in interwar Lithuania, and during the first Soviet occupation, it became a transfer point for NKVD prisoners to the camps.
Tens of thousands of lives were taken at IX Fort during the Nazi occupation. In 1959, a museum was opened on the site commemorating the tragic events, and a few decades later, a monument to the victims of Nazism and a memorial complex were built to artistically commemorate the painful fractures of the past.
The Šilainiai district magnets of the project "Collect Kaunas" are available at the museum's ticket office at Žemaičių pl. 73, Kaunas.
