Give Way for Happiness in Kaunas!

On March 20, Kaunas will ll be celebrating the International Day of Happiness. Everyone’s welcome to join.

What is happiness? It is a possibility to stay together and share positive emotions without any barriers – despite the differences in our abilities, needs, cultural and social status, age or gender.

This year, on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, celebrated on March 20, the residents, businesses and institutions of Kaunas and Kaunas District were invited to open the door for everyone. Especially the ones exposed to greater difficulties when accessing the cultural life in the city and the surrounding areas, the shrines of art, public spaces or transport, shopping malls and other locations in our city. The International Day of Happiness is organised by the team of Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022.

The lime fruit, also called green lemon, was chosen to be the symbol of the Day of Happiness this year: it is sour, yet full of flavour and really, really healthy. Most importantly, the word 'lime' has a witty connection to the Lithuanian word 'laimė' which means 'happiness'. So, each time you see a bright green colour around or smell the flavour of lime fruit, you will know there is someone near you celebrating happiness.

More than 100 different events in Kaunas and Kaunas district are planned for March 20. Museums, cafes, public institutions, libraries, small and big businesses – everyone’s got something to share. There’s absolutely no way someone can participate in all of them, but here are our top picks that we sincerely recommend for our non-Lithuanian speaking friends!

Those arriving in Kaunas by train will be greeted by The BrassBees, the Kaunas University of Technology brass band, at the railway station. Their performance will make sure you’ll have a splendid day. Starting 7:30 am!

At 9:30 am, a seminar called “Culture of accessibility and art of approaching: Experiences worth feeling happy about” will kick off at the followed by a discussion. At the workshop, the topic of accessibility which is of high sensitivity for Europe and Lithuania will be elaborated by international professionals of culture, psychology, design and urban planning. The seminar will take place at Valdas Adamkus Presidential Library (S. Daukanto g. 25).

At 11 am, the contemporary dance troupe Nuepiko will invite everyone for a mass workout. Where, you ask? Right in the main hall of the Kaunas Municipality!

A storytelling performance for adults is scheduled for 6 pm at Cafedemic, located at the Vytautas Magnus University building on S. Daukanto g. 28. The production, called “I Emigrated by Accident”, will be executed – in English! – by a professional storyteller Milda Varnauskaitė (Amsterdam). She will take you on a trip that will mix folk tales with her own adventures.

Soon after that, we’ll rush to the Kaunas Railway Station once again. On 7 pm, it will be illuminated in the bright colour of lime fruit. For the first time in Lithuania, the venue will host a single dance floor for three gigs of different genres of music. The silent concerts will be performed by the dreamy indie pop band Flash Voyage, one of the hottest Lithuanian DJs Manfredas and one of the most interesting electronic music producers Paulius Kilbauskas. You’ll get headphones so that you can decide which performer to listen to!
