Now that the spring has finally arrived, it’s time to plan your summer activities. On June 11th, thousands of participants of the fifth Kaunas Marathon will flood the streets of our city. You’re welcome to join the crowd.
Kaunas Marathon is a sports festival for everyone despite of their age or physical preparation. It is an event meant to enhance the social and physical activity, and to develop healthy life-style traditions in Lithuania, and it‘s doing really well.
‘Kaunas is a suitable city for running tourism and other types of sport tourism as the city is arranged in a comfortable way. In 2016, we had around 250 participants from 36 foreign countries; this is great for the city, those people get to know Kaunas and certainly want to visit again in 2017’, said Algirdas Pukis, founder of Kaunas Marathon in an interview we published last year. You can read the full version of it here.
The start and finish of the Kaunas Marathon course are at the Town Hall square – this is where the main events and shows take part during the big day. The 5 and 10 km runs take place in the Old Town. The marathon and half marathon track bearing a 5-star safety certificate runs along the Neris and Nemunas Rivers.
No matter which distance you choose, the Kaunas Marathon is a flat one – the height difference between the highest and the lowest points of the route is just 14 meters. Special short distance runs are offered for kids and families.
Mathew Kipkorir Sigei from Kenya won the men’s title of Kaunas Marathon in 2016 with 2 hours 26 minutes and 39 seconds. The women’s title was also won by a Kenyan runner last year – it was Leah Kusar (03:02:53).
There’s still plenty of time to register and plan your trip to Kaunas. Head to the official page of Kaunas Marathon for starters. See you in June!
