Last weekend saw the debut of UIM F2 World Championship in Kaunas. The Kaunas Lagoon had never witnessed such action before and, combined with lovely June weather and the fact that our local pilot Edgaras Riabko finished 3rd, the weekend was a blast for those who attended the race of experienced pilots from all over the world.
A few incidents on track raised the tension on Sunday afternoon, as a few boats had to finish the race early and it had to be restarted a couple of times. One particular crash ended with a Finnish pilot Harri Lehti being taken to the hospital, but his condition was better soon after.
Riabko had qualified 2nd on Saturday and was keeping the pace for the whole race, with Team Abu Dhabi driver Rashed Al Qemzi in the first position. In the very end of the day, however, the Swede Johan Osterberg took the 2nd place. “I can’t be too disappointed because a podium finish in my home town was something I had dreamt about but never expected.”, said Riabko after the podium.
Edgaras Riabko is the only Lithuanian participating in the F2 World Championship.
The race teams now head to Antwerp, Belgium. We hope the Kaunas Lagoon left a good impression for those involved and the F2 World Championship will be back in Kaunas Lagoon next year. Here are some snapshots from the weekend.
