The field around the Kaunas Castle is home to many traditional and modern events. From choir performances to theatre plays – there’s something going on almost every week. Starting July 20th, the field will be frequented by cinephiles, as the day marks the official start of the open-air cinema season in Kaunas.
Hosted by the team of the historic cinema Romuva, the open-air cinema will screen a total of 13 movies this summer. As Romuva is an art house cinema, a lot of the movies come from countries like Iran, Norway and Austria and the subtitles are Lithuanian. Gladly, some of the films in English, too! Did we mention all of the screenings are for free?
On July 20th, the season will be opened by Grand Budapest Hotel, the iconic masterpiece of Wes Anderson. Everyone’s invited to join The Rolling Stones on their grand Latin American tour on Aug 3rd; we also recommend you to check Secret Sharer, the first feature film by Peter Fudakowski who wrote the script inspired by a short story about a ship in the Gulf of Siam.
As the building of Romuva is currently being reconstructed, the cinema uses the premises of National Kaunas Drama Theatre on Kęstučio g. 62. This is where the screenings will be moved in case of tropical storms or extremely cold weather. Some of the open-air screenings will be held in the backyard of the theatre, too.
